Andromeda galaxy showing moon for scale NGC-411 Long exposure of Orion Nebula (24in telescope smartphone) NASA has captured an extremely crisp infrared image of the center of our Milky Way galaxy. Spanning a distance of more than 600 light-years, this panorama reveals details within the dense swirls of gas and dust in high resolution, opening the door to future research into how massive stars are forming and what's feeding the supermassive black hole at our galaxy's core.

Award-winning astrophotographer Rogelio Bernal Andreo captured this incredible view of the Andromeda galaxy, or M31, along with some clouds of cosmic dust in the Milky Way galaxy. Andreo said that this is "the first known image of M31 that also shows at high resolution, depth and full color several of the cloud formations from our own Milky Way that happen to be in this very same field of view - but much closer to us than M31," which lies about 2.5 million light-years from Earth.
The nebula, also known as MyCn18, is a young planetary nebula located about 8,000 light-years away

Astronomers called it the Boomerang Nebula in 1980 after observing it with a large ground-based telescope, but after seeing high-resolution Hubble images, "Bow Tie Nebula" might have been better. Fierce 500,000 kilometer-per-hour winds blowing cold gas away from the central dying star seem to have created the shape.

Before the dawn of Hubble, throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, astronomers had a suspicion about what lurked at the center of galaxies, but they needed the high-resolution power of Hubble to support their theory. We now know that at the center of every galaxy is a supermassive black hole and that the larger the size of a galaxy's central bulge, the more massive its black hole.

NASA's black-hole-hunting NuSTAR X-ray space telescope has found 40 new black holes and neutron star binaries in the Andromeda galaxy. The inset at top shows the X-ray view of a section (see main image) of Andromeda.
With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy, but also our very sense of being in the universe, on the 25th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, TASCHEN celebrates its most breathtaking deep space images both as scientific feats and as photographic masterpieces. Ultra high-resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time
